In Turkey, the most common examples of limited-access roads are motorways (Otoyol) and expressways (Motorlu Taşıt Yolu). Because these roads are engineered for continuous traffic, direct access from neighboring businesses, agricultural fields, or houses is strictly prohibited by traffic law.

Why Certain Vehicles and Pedestrians Are Prohibited

Due to the high speeds sustained on limited-access roads, safety rules strictly forbid any road user who cannot maintain a safe minimum speed. Slow-moving traffic creates massive speed differentials, which are a leading cause of severe highway collisions. The following are legally banned from entering limited-access roads:

• Pedestrians and Animals: Walking along the road or bringing animals onto these routes is highly illegal and dangerous.
• Non-Motorized Vehicles: Bicycles and animal-drawn carriages are strictly prohibited.
• Slow-Moving Motor Vehicles: Agricultural tractors and specific construction machinery that cannot travel safely at high speeds are not permitted unless they have special authorization.

Entering and leaving a limited-access road requires careful coordination. When entering, drivers must use the acceleration lane (katılım şeridi) to increase their speed to match the flow of the main highway traffic before merging.
